I am a senior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, getting my undergraduate degree. I am currently applying to get my master’s in social work next year. I want to be a licensed therapist and help children who are struggling. I solidified my desire to help others with their own struggles when I went on my first service trip to the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Reservations in South Dakota. I was devastated to witness the dire poverty on the Pine Ridge Reservation personally. I saw children who suffered from depression, came from broken homes, and had eyes full of hopelessness. In high school, I got more involved in working with children.
At the age of 16, I started working at a local daycare. Then, I began volunteering at a private non-profit organization that specializes in children who struggle with learning disabilities. From my first day on the job, I knew I wanted a career working with children but was unsure of how to pursue such a career. I decided to get a business administration degree in my undergraduate studies as a practical option. However through my college years, I still wanted a job in counseling children, and my own personal work with therapists in the last few years solidified my decision to pursue a degree in social work so I can eventually get licensed as a mental health counselor who specializes in helping children. Making a positive difference in children’s lives is the career path I want to take.
