• Area Health Education Center Scholars Program: 160 hours

  This initiative aims to delve into the social determinants of health that impact tribal populations, particularly focusing on the high rates of Substance Use Disorders (SUD) among Native American youth, which surpass those of other racial/ethnic groups. The alarming statistic that suicide rates are three times higher than non-Hispanic whites further stresses the pressing need for intervention. AHEC’s proactive measures have demonstrated success in decreasing suicidal ideation and substance abuse among Native American youth. Prevention science guides my efforts to positively influence health outcomes by addressing risk factors and enhancing health-promoting factors, with a specific focus on targeting preventable risks.

• Crisis Text Line: 40 hours

  Engaging in crisis volunteering has not only allowed me to build meaningful connections but has also prompted collaborative efforts to brainstorm effective relief techniques with individuals in distress. Throughout this experience, I have cultivated the ability to develop a personalized relief plan, essential for navigating challenging situations with texters expressing suicidal thoughts. This involves honing my skills in active listening, empathy, and crisis intervention, ensuring that I am equipped to provide immediate support and assistance during critical moments. The process of building relationships and implementing individualized relief strategies has been an integral aspect of my crisis volunteering journey, reinforcing the importance of tailored and compassionate approaches to address the unique needs of those in crisis.

• Program Ambassador: 28 hours

  As a program ambassador, I am dedicated to outreach initiatives aimed at fostering interest in medical education among Native students. Through targeted engagement and informational sessions, I strive to create a supportive environment that encourages and empowers indigenous individuals to pursue careers in medicine.

I am a proud member of the Caddo Nation of Oklahoma, and I am currently attending the first tribally affiliated medical school in the United States. My school, Oklahoma State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, is located in Tahlequah, Oklahoma on the Cherokee Nation reservation. OSU’s commitment is invested in providing tribal Oklahoma with accessible healthcare and increasing the population of Native American Physicians within the state.

In my journey as a third-year medical student at Oklahoma State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, I have embraced a multifaceted approach to my academic pursuits, actively engaging in professional development, mentoring, teaching, and campus research. With my genuine passion for medicine, I have used my understanding of barriers to education to guide students through the intricacies of their medical hardships, sharing insights and providing support for their personal and professional growth. Serving as a teaching assistant has also allowed me to step into leadership roles, helping students in remediation courses not only achieve academic success but also gain confidence in their abilities. Simultaneously, I am dedicated to advancing medical knowledge through active involvement in research on campus, contributing to the broader understanding of radiology, pathology, and oncology. This holistic approach reflects my commitment to both academic and personal development, as I strive to make meaningful contributions to the medical field and positively impact the learning experiences of those around me.

Before settling down, I envision practicing medicine for a tribal nation in rural Oklahoma, fostering healthcare accessibility and addressing unique challenges within indigenous communities. To prepare for this endeavor, I am actively engaging in Area Health Education Center’s courses, specifically focusing on healthcare disparities in tribal medicine, equipping myself with the knowledge and skills needed to make a positive impact on the well-being of the community I aim to serve.

I am thrilled to express my gratitude towards Native Forward for awarding me scholarships that have significantly enhanced my sense of belonging within the medical field. The generous support from Native Forward has not only alleviated the financial burden of pursuing my education but has also served as a powerful affirmation of my dedication and potential in the medical profession of Radiology. This invaluable opportunity has not only empowered me to pursue my academic and career goals but has also strengthened my connection to my cultural roots, fostering a deeper sense of identity and pride. With the support of Native Forward, I am not only advancing my education but also contributing to the diversification and inclusivity of the medical field, creating a positive impact on both my personal journey and the patients I will one day have the privilege to serve.

As a member of the smaller tribe, the Caddo Nation of Oklahoma, I am immensely grateful for the support extended by Native Forward, which has significantly bolstered members of smaller tribes pursuing higher education. The recognition and encouragement provided by Native Forward have been a beacon of empowerment, fostering a strong sense of unity among members of differing tribes, each with their unique aspirations. The oversight of some medical schools and universities who have failed to include the Caddo Nation on their list of recognized tribes, despite our federal recognition, highlights the significance of tribal acknowledgment that Native Forward actively advocates for within the broader community. Through their support, Native Forward not only acknowledges the unique challenges faced by smaller indigenous communities but also actively works towards breaking down barriers and ensuring that every tribal member has equal opportunities in the realm of higher education.
